2021 Safety Management Survey

In May 2021, HSE International launched a survey asking Canadians how their employers were investing in health and safety within the workplace. Here’s what they had to say about performance, commitment, challenges, risk management, capability, reporting, and more.

Over a year after the COVID-19 pandemic changed how and where most of us work, we heard from 1510 Canadians about how their employers are investing in health and safety within the workplace. This is an area of increasing focus for Canadian businesses and the survey provides an insight into some of the challenges employers are facing.

Key findings

Some of the key findings of the survey are:

  • 31% of respondents reported that their safety performance had improved while 61% reported their performance stayed the same

  • 51% of employers chose not report on their health and safety goals and performance publicly

  • 37% of employers focused on both health and safety equally

  • Less than a third of respondents reported that their senior leadership regularly attended the worksite

  • 18% of respondents reported that there is no corporate risk framework within their workplace

When we launched our Safety Management Survey, we set out to understand how employers across industries were approaching their health and safety responsibilities post pandemic. While many have reported either an improvement or are continuing to managed, some have reported a decrease, ushering in an opportunity for businesses to benchmark their own scope and identify areas for improvement against the results of the survey.

Driven by fluctuating COVID-19 restrictions, new risk models, and greater demand of social responsibility, what it means to manage safety in the workplace is changing. Job scopes are being reinvented, creating additional 'unknown risks' - where work is redefined to create new value and meaning for organizations, employees, stakeholders, and communities.
